Syracuse may not be so far away from joining the Atlantic Coast Conference, after all.

The SU football team will play Florida State in 2004 and 2005, SU announced yesterday. Next season, the Seminoles will come to the Carrier Dome, and in 2005, SU will travel to FSU.

Florida State and SU have met four times, most recently in 1991, when FSU beat the Orangemen, 46-16, in Tallahassee, Fla.

Syracuse also has Virginia and Buffalo slated for its non-conference schedule next season.

Cross Country

The Syracuse men’s cross country team beat Binghamton, 33-23, in a dual meet in Vestal on Saturday. Brian McNeil and Chris Muldoon finished first and second in the meet, respectively. McNeil won the race with a time of 26:31.74. Muldoon finished with a time of 26:31.93

The SU women’s team lost, 40-19.

Leah Folmsbee’s time of 20:00.00 was first for the Orangewomen and fourth overall. SU’s next meet is the Orange Classic on September 27 at Drumlins Golf Center.

Tennis

Last year’s midseason decision to team Wei-Ming Leong and Trine Lise Juliussen continues to pay dividends for tennis coach Mac Gifford.

The duo improved to 11-0 in doubles competition dating back to last year after they won the Flight B doubles title, 8-3, at Cornell’s Fall Invitational on Sunday.

Because Syracuse’s other doubles team, freshman Katie Bramante and senior Jessica Schlosser, won its first-round match, the two SU doubles teams faced each other in the final.

Bramante also reached the final in the Flight B singles competition. She lost, though, to Colorado’s Kasia Preneta, 6-0, 6-0.

Freshman Carolina Huignard won the Flight A consolation championship, 6-4, over Buffalo’s Alexis Brill.

Juliussen, Schlosser and freshman Kendyl Severino lost their singles matches on the last day of the tournament.

Syracuse’s next tournament begins Sept. 16, when SU travels to the Maryland Invitational.
