Boos and Bravos: The Weeknd, “Enough is Enough”

The best and worst of Daily Orange news this week.

New York is one of only two states to enact affirmative consent, or “Yes Means Yes,” laws. Although it was signed into law in July, the importance of “Enough is Enough” is at the forefront of people’s minds with students heading back to class and out to parties this week. Kudos to Chancellor Kent Syverud for being the first private college chancellor or president in New York to endorse the new law.

The Great New York State Fair is gearing up for it’s final weekend, which will be a can’t-miss event. With so many musicians, exhibits and food vendors, the fair is a non-stop sensory overload. Forget about organic chemistry and pet some piglets while the summer is still hot.

Syracuse Football

The Weeknd rumor

Although the Juice Jam lineup is still pretty good, let’s be honest, The Weeknd would have been killer. The speculation over the possible appearance of the R&B artist, although not perpetuated by University Union in any way, spread like wildfire over campus. When the real lineup dropped, disappointment could be heard all over campus. By the time the first set begins Sept. 13, though, all ears will be on the music.

Robert Washington
Four-star running back Robert Washington’s decommitment to SU delivered a blow to the athletics program earlier this week. The highly ranked player was told he would be the only running back in the Orange’s 2016 class — a seat that is now vacant. This may possibly be a window of opportunity for the team, although the reaction on social media was widely negative.

Labor Day weekend

Long weekends are definitely a bonus, but this Labor Day weekend will be SU’s only three-day weekend for the entire year. That’s right — the only one. This is a result of the later start date, which has made Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is usually part of a three-day holiday, the last day of winter break. For those of you lucky enough not to have Friday classes, though, this really doesn’t apply. Everyone else, live it up while it lasts, because Monday through Fridays are about to become a hard reality.
