SU announces completion of Academic Strategic Plan

The Academic Strategic Plan, one of the three components of Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud’s Fast Forward initiative, is complete, the university announced Thursday.

The plan will be used to “serve as a strategic roadmap to guide priorities and institutional decision making in the coming years.” Over the past year, members of the SU community have submitted their input on what should be included in the plan. Over the course of the year, the university received feedback from more than 1,000 sources, according to an SU News release.

“This is an aspirational plan for the University,” said Interim Vice Chancellor and Provost Liz Liddy, who announced the finalization of the plan, in the release. “It sets out a bold vision for where we want to go and what we want to be as a university in today’s rapidly shifting and highly competitive higher education landscape.”

The Academic Strategic Plan, which is subtitled “Trajectory to Excellence,” is broken down into six areas of focus: promoting an outstanding student experience; advancing discovery and research; fostering internationalism on campus and beyond; expanding the university’s commitment to veterans; cultivating and supporting innovation; and galvanizing institution-wide excellence.

“The Academic Strategic Plan will help set our future direction and make the University the best it can be,” said Syverud in the release. “It will be a living and evolving document that will ensure that teaching, learning, research and service, along with a strong undergraduate and graduate student experience, drives everything we do.”

A summary of the plan was drafted in April for the SU community to review and the subsequent draft was reviewed by the Board of Trustees in May. When the Board of Trustees met in May, it approved the full version of the plan, according to the release.

An oversight committee has been formed to assess the progress of the plan.
