Syracuse ice hockey outshoots, ties Robert Morris again

Despite outshooting Robert Morris for the second day in a row, Syracuse (3-6-7, 2-1-3 College Hockey America) tied the Colonials (4-9-3, 1-3-2) on Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh. The 1-1 tie set a program record as SU’s seventh of the season.

Mirroring Friday night’s game, SU scored less than four minutes into the game. Forward Julie Knerr scored off a pass from forward Melissa Piacentini, who extended her point streak to five games. Piacentini has eight of her 11 points, and five of her eight goals, in the streak.

The rest of the period was dominated by penalties, with two from each team, but neither was able to capitalize. On SU’s first power play, the Orange mustered only two shots on goal before being shut out on the second. Robert Morris got only one shot in its two opportunities.

With 7:25 left in the first period, forward Katie Fergus scored what appeared the be the game-tying goal, but officials reviewed the play and called RMU for goalie interference, negating the goal. SU took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

With 6:14 left in the second, defender Nicole Renault took a tripping penalty and on this advantage, RMU converted. Forward Mackenzie Johnston scored a minute into the power play, with assists from forward Katherine Murphy and Katelyn Scott.

The rest of the game and overtime went scoreless, despite 12 SU shots in the second and third periods. The Orange had four to the Colonials’ one in the extra five minutes. Syracuse outshot Robert Morris 35-21 for the game.
