Syracuse surrenders halftime lead, ties Drexel 2-2 on the road

Stephanie Skilton dribbled the ball along the left sideline and pushed it through a defender’s legs.

Two passes later, Erin Simon had an open shot on the right side of the field.

Simon’s shot went wide in the second minute of double overtime and Syracuse continued to search for the game-winning goal. But it never came.

The Orange (3-2-3) tied Drexel (1-5-1) by a score of 2-2 on Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field in Philadelphia. SU outshot the Dragons 7-1 in overtime, but did not convert its chances.

Syracuse’s Jessica Vigna scored her first collegiate goal in the 23rd minute. She shot the ball from just beyond the 18-yard box into the lower left corner of the net. Maya Pitts also scored eight minutes later, on an assist from Vigna, giving Syracuse a 2-0 lead. Pitts led the Orange with six shots, all of which were on goal.

But similar to previous games for the Orange, its strong play didn’t last the entire game. Drexel’s Lauren Stollar scored off a corner kick less than five minutes into the second half. Three minutes after that, Stollar scored again.

The game remained 2-2 through the end of double overtime as neither team could break through with a game-winning goal.

It was the fourth time in eight games SU went into overtime. It was also the first time this season SU didn’t win after leading at halftime.
