JUNE 28, 3:09 P.M. – The Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission granted a second appeal Thursday for Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, the former Libyan intelligence official convicted of bombing Pan Am 103, according to the BBC.

Pan Am flight 103 was en route from London to New York when it exploded over Lockerbie on Dec. 21, 1988. Two hundred and seventy people were killed, including 35 Syracuse University students.

The commission, which is an independent judicial review body, has been examining the evidence presented in Megrahi’s trial and said in a statement that ‘the applicant may have suffered a miscarriage of justice,’ according to the New York Times.

Megrahi is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence, but could go free on second appeal. According to the BBC, three Scottish judges will hear the appeal in about a year.
