Police make arrest in July sex assault

Syracuse police arrested a man Tuesday evening who allegedly sexually assaulted a Syracuse University graduate student on July 26, said Kevin Morrow, director of SU News Services.

Robert Adams III, 21, of Syracuse, was linked by DNA evidence to the assault, and was positively identified by the victim. He was charged with first-degree rape and first-degree criminal sexual act, both of which are Class B felonies, Morrow said.

Adams was released from the Collins Correctional Facility on July 25, having served 33 months for a burglary charge. After acquiring the DNA evidence, police began checking locations for Adams, and found him at the Syracuse Rescue Mission, Morrow said.

The victim was reportedly walking down Stratford Street in the early afternoon on July 26 when a man attacked her from behind and sexually assaulted her in a residential garage. She was able to break free and run away, and was treated at a local hospital, according to a campus safety alert.
